You wake up somewhere, without memory. You're a Pokémon, that's all you know. What will you do? Who will you become?

Care to find out? Start a thread on this forum!

Start the thread by telling me what kind of Pokémon you are and, if relevant, what gender.

You will always be the lowest member of an evolution chain. So you can be a Pichu, but not a Pikachu. If you want to be a Pikachu, you'll have to find a way to evolve. I'll tell you what's required for that.

You don't have a name, as far as you know. Remember, you have no memories yet.

What does play look like?

I'll tell you where you are and what's happening. Then you tell me what you want to do. Then I say
a) that it's not possible,
b) how it works out, or
c) that it requires a test.
We'll keep doing this until we're finished.

The details

Don't panic! It's not that complex. I'll guide you during play too.

You start with 12 points. These represent your stamina, energy, or effort. You can gamble them in tests, to increase your odds. You can also convert them into skill boosts.

You don't know specific moves, instead you're skilled in up to four types in general. You're always skilled in your own type(s).

Whenever you do something, it belongs to a specific type. For example, Ice deals with freezing and cooling, Dark deals with subterfuge, Psychic deals with empathy and telekinesis, and so on. Normal is a catch-all for anything that doesn't fit another type. Use your imagination.

You can buy a bonus to a skill, up to +3. It costs the bonus multiplied by itself. You can upgrade in steps.

+1 costs 1 point.
+2 costs 3 more points, for a total of 4.
+3 costs 5 more points, for a total of 9.

Don't spend all your points! You can gamble up to six on any test, which can greatly increase your odds for things you're not skilled at.

Example

You're a Pichu, so your type is Electric.
You start with 12 points and an Electric skill of +0. You can add up to three additional skills at any time.

If you try to electrocute someone, or light a christmas tree by yourself, you'll have to make an Electric test. Because your type is Electric, you get +1 for the test.

Say you spend 4 points for a +2 bonus for your Electric skill. Now your total bonus would be +1+2 = +3.

If you want to boost your skill to +3, you'll need to spend an additional 5 points.

If you try to paralyze a Water Pokémon, you'd get an additional +1 because Water is weak to Electric. However, you'd get a -1 when trying to do the same to a Grass Pokémon. You would even automatically fail when trying it on a Ground Pokémon!

Say your bonus to a test is +3. You don't like those odds so you gamble another 3 points on the test, for a total of +6. Now your chances are good.

How do tests work?

A test is used to determine whether you succeed or not. I will call for a test whenever it's uncertain whether you'll succeed or fail.

I'll roll six-sided dice to determine your success. If at least one of the dice shows a 1, you succeed, otherwise you fail. So more dice means a greater chance of success. The amount of dice rolled is equal to the bonus you get for the test.

If you fail, you lose all gambled points and I'll describe what happens.

If you succeed, you keep all gambled points and you can choose:
a) you gain a point, and I'll describe what happens.
b) you don't gain a point, but you describe what happens.

If you want option b, say so before committing to the test, otherwise I'll go ahead and assume you wanted option a.

Evolution

There are three tiers of power, you start at the lowest. You reach the next tier when you evolve. If you can't evolve three times, you can still reach the third tier, simply by becoming more experienced and powerful.

At the second tier, you get +1 to all tests. At the third tier, you get +2 to all tests.
By the way, when dealing with higher-tier Pokémon, you'll get a corresponding penalty.

What you need to evolve depends on what Pokémon you are and I'll let you know.

A full-blown character example

Male Raichu, Electric.
Electric +3 (always +4 because of type)
Normal +2
Dark +2
Water +1
Currently has 5 points.
