Pokémon Contest Mechanics

Sat Apr 18, 2009, 5:24 AM
:bucktooth: If you want to know the mechanics behind the contests, read on.

Participation

I call for a contest. You reply with a description of your entry:
:bulletpurple: What Pokémon are you (species, gender, and name)?
:bulletpurple: What single move are you using?
:bulletpurple: What makes you so special in this contest?
:bulletpurple: How much hubris do you have (on a scale from zero to five)?

Fate

I'll roll a number of six-sided dices equal to your hubris plus one. So if your hubris score is three, I roll four dice.

I look at the result of the roll and determine your fate:
:) Does at least one of the dice show a one? You succeed and get a ribbon.
:noes: If not, does at least one of the dice show a six? You screw up badly.
:( Otherwise, you simply fail.

Outcome

I'll describe how it plays out, in a reply to your comment. I use your description and fate to make up what happens.

I also total the results of the dice, which is your total score. I'll use that at the end of the contest.

Honerable mentions

At the end of the contest there will be three honerable mentions. You get this if you have the lowest total score in your category:
:) Best of show is selected from those who succeded.
:) Crowd favorite is selected from those who failed.
:noes: Public disgrace is selected from those who screwed up badly.

Dice example

As an example, suppose your hubris is three, so I roll four dice. Here are some possible results:
1,3,4,5: You succeed with a total score of 13.
1,2,6,6: You succeed with a total score of 15.
2,2,4,5: You fail with a total score of 13.
2,4,4,6: You screw up badly with a total score of 16.

Strategy

It's all about hubris. Hubris is excessive pride or self-confidence. It gives you more dice. The more you have, the higher your chances of winning. But if you do fail, the higher your chances of screwing up badly. It also boosts your total score, which means that the more you have, the lower your chances of getting a honerable mention.

So what's a good strategy? It totally depends on what you're aiming for. You can use the following two tables as guides.

Probability distribution
H Succ Fail SuB
0 16.7% 66.7% 16.7%
1 30.6% 44.4% 25.0%
2 42.1% 29.6% 28.2%
3 51.8% 19.8% 28.5%
4 59.8% 13.2% 27.0%
5 66.5% 08.8% 24.7%

Total score range
H Succ Fail SuB
0 01 - 01 02 - 05 06 - 06
1 02 - 07 04 - 10 08 - 12
2 03 - 13 06 - 15 10 - 18
3 04 - 19 08 - 20 12 - 24
4 05 - 25 10 - 25 14 - 30
5 06 - 31 12 - 30 16 - 36

;P But don't forget, in the end this is just a silly little game!

Cool, let's give it a another go!

I'm Psyche, a male Gardevoir. My move is a mindshattering Pyschic! Despite the ridicule I get from humans about my "feminine" appearance, my special attack will leave no doubt about my power and masculinity!

My hubris is at the peak of 5!

:) What about we keep it as an example entry?
:iconwerdna250:
Not that this really matters, I think you got some of the numbers wrong on your lil' chart there.

For the "SuB" in "Total score range"

Shouldn't the least amount of points for 5 Hubris be 11? Not 16?
6 + 1+ 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 11.

0 Hubris = 6
1 Hubris = 7
2 Hubris = 8
3 Hubris = 9
4 Hubris = 10
5 Hubris = 11

As I said before, it doesn't really matter, we get the jist of it. But I'm just making sure there isn't something else effecting the chances?

:) Thanks for checking the numbers!

The table is correct, but it's a little sneaky.
As soon as a 1 turns up, it becomes a succes. So the minimum SoB score with five hubris requires a roll of 2+2+2+2+2+6 = 16.
:iconwerdna250:
DERP! You are right! rofl

And that is my weakness in all math tests, not fully reading the situation xD!

Alas, good call!
