This is my favorite kind of 3D fractal. It's best property is its simplicity, which makes it a useful test subject.

This thing could exist in reality. It won't be difficult to assemble it, just tedious. The main question is how many iterations you're willing to go for. I decided a low number was best for this scene.

The frames were rendered with POV-Ray and combined into a flash animation with a tool called Blaze GIF Creator, which despite its name can also epxort to flash (that's where the Blaze advertisement comes from).

At first this deviation was a 150x150 animated GIF, but I replaced it with a 400x400 flash because *parrotdolphin wanted it bigger. :)

(If you like this one check out Rotating against gravity as well!)

Nice one ...
Constructive fractals are fun :-)
What's your max_trace_level on this one ?
:iconjrjay:
They sure are!

I set max_trace_level to 256 for final renders by default to prevent frustration, but it usually needs far less. I belief this one didn't exceed 10. As an aside, this reflection scene required a depth of about 16.

What keeps the trace level down in this scene is the limited contribution of reflection (70%), lack of transparent surfaces, and lack of parallel mirrors (the rays are quickly reflected out of the fractal bounds).

Hey, that's way cool. I want it bigger!!
:iconjrjay:
Thanks!
I chose 150x150 because DA doesn't display animated GIFs larger than that. You're stuck with a preview image and people need to click the Download button. Too much fuss. Oh and because of the file size.

Funny, as my frontpage image is a 250x150 animated GIF... I guess they didn't have that restriction back when I submitted that. :)
:iconparrotdolphin:
You could put it bigger on YouTube. :D DA doesn't like animations.
:iconjrjay:
Hmm YouTube doesn't allow loops and messes the quality... But I changed it into a bigger and better flash animation, which DA accepts! Coolness.
:iconparrotdolphin:
Thanks! Its absolute coolness!
:icononceandforever:
That is really cool. How long did it take to write?
:iconjrjay:
Thanks!
If I would create this animation from scratch I guess it would take about an hour if I refrain from experimenting.
In reality I've reused code and adapted an approach that took more time to write, but allows more complex effects, like adding gravity. I also had to hunt for free animation software and figure out an acceptable way to get it on display on DA. As a result the whole thing took about four hours.
